CHILD SAVING INSTITUTE
Child Saving Institute is looking for caring, qualified
individuals to join our agency in providing A Moment of Care,
A Lifetime
of Hope to the children and families we serve.
As a part of the Child Saving Institute, employees in
counseling and
shelter services are rewarded by seeing families grow and
relate better
together and abused children begin to reach out and grow. Childcare
staff can expect to receive Thank You’s in the form of smiles and hugs.
Agency Mission:
Responding to the cry of a child.
Agency History:
Child Saving Institute was founded in 1892 by Baptist minister A.W. Clark.
Rev. Clark had attempted to reform the men and women of Ramcat Alley, a
saloon-lined street near the Missouri River, but soon realized there was more
need to help
the children he found huddled in doorways, neglected by their parents.
Originally called
the Boys’ and Girls’ Aid Society of Omaha, CSI’s first home was an abandoned
livery stable
at 18th Street and St.
Mary’s Avenue. A seven year old girl was the first child to be admitted on April
7, 1892.
In 1901, a move was made to the second home of Child Saving Institute at 18th and Ohio
Streets. That space quickly became too small. Plans were drawn up for a new
state-of-the-art facility. With the help of a $25,000 pledge from George Joslyn, donations
poured in from the citizens and businesses of the Omaha area. In 1911 the entire community
celebrated the dedication of the debt-free building located across from the University
Medical Center at 42nd and Jackson. From 1911 to 1975, Child Saving Institute provided a
variety of services from that facility. In addition to maintaining the orphanage and
adoption services, CSI trained nurses specializing in pediatrics and provided a home for
unwed mothers. Doctors and medical students from the Medical Center supplied not only
routine care for the children, but also performed surgeries to correct birth defects and
researched infant care and nutrition.
In 1985, after a short stay in a building on North 40th Street, CSI moved to its current
location at 115 S. 46th Street. Consistent with Clark’s original mission, CSI has provided
care for children who were available for adoption, had been abandoned or needed care apart
from their parents before returning to improved home situations. Many people recall the
"orphanage years," which came to an end with the closing of the orphanage program in 1966.
CSI continued to offer adoption services, and pioneered the "open adoption"
process in the 1980’s. With open adoptions came the growing awareness of the needs and
wishes of the birthparents, adoptive parents and the adoptee.
Today, CSI provides a continuum of services that all work together in the prevention and
treatment of child abuse and neglect. As the needs of the area’s children have changed, so
have the services offered by the organization. The most recent program addition is
JOURNEYS, a unique and holistic approach to treating substance abuse in young people. This
program is the result of a collaborative effort with two other Omaha organizations,
Catholic Charities and Omaha Home for Boys and is being funded, in part, by the Omaha
Award.
Though the services and programs of Child Saving Institute have evolved since 1892, the
mission has remained the same -- caring for kids.
