What Makes Joe Tess Place so Special?

Tradition; It’s as simple as that. Joe Tess Place began its legacy as a small neighborhood tavern in South Omaha back in the early 1930’s. The tavern’s main attraction, carp portions, cut, breaded, fried, were then placed in a cookie jar to be sold for only 15 cents.

These pieces of carp served on homemade rye bread gave birth to Joe Tess’ Famous Fish Sandwich. 75 years later, the humble carp sandwich remains the driving force behind Joe Tess Place.

From the simplest of beginnings, the restaurant, now one of Omaha’s oldest and most successful family restaurants remains committed to practicing great service and high quality fresh fish. Owners, Bill, Dave and Dan Falt all worked at Tess’ under their father Bill Sr. as young boys either at the restaurant or Falt Fisheries, the restaurant’s wholesale fish supplier business located just south of Bellevue, NE. Their father’s hard work, experience, and a love for ‘the fish business’ has rubbed off and has helped the brothers maintain and grow one of Omaha’s most successful restaurants.

Dan Falt, the youngest of the three brothers who share the restaurants operational responsibilities said: “It’s amazing that after 75 years we’re still founded in the principals that made this place what it is.” “I love it when someone comes in and tells me that they’ve been eating our famous fish sandwich for x-amount of years”. He also stated that his father, who is now retired, worked very hard to make this restaurant what it is today, always talks about the people and how he misses them the most”, not the grind of running a restaurant. “Our customers truly are the greatest; the name ‘Joe Tess Place’ will always remain a staple of Omaha cuisine”. “Growing up everyone was familiar with the name and more importantly, the great fish sandwich.”

After 75 years of success, its’ hard to disagree with their success, Falt says he’s looking forward to another 75 years promoting Omaha’s Famous Fish Sandwich.
