The James Skinner Baking Company was founded in 1983 by Lloyd E. Skinner and James G. Skinner. The facility was located at 5322 Center Street in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of the James Skinner Baking Company purchase, the bakery was making about 300 different products for Hinky Dinky, a supermarket chain. Shortly after the purchase of the bakery, Hinky Dinky ceased operations forcing Skinner to seek other business opportunities.
In the early 80’s, Skinner attempted to develop retail sales through food brokers however; that effort was discontinued as it did not provide the results necessary to fill the bakery. In 1985 Skinner began to co-pack products for a major bakery company. In 1989, as the relationship developed and business grew, Skinner expanded the facility to 36,000 square feet.
In the early 90’s, Skinner began developing its retail in-store business in order to diversify its overall business. The business began to expand through the use of direct salespeople and a newly emerging broker sales force. The period between 1992 and 1999 saw the company explode in gross sales. The growth came from a combination of retail in-store bakery sales and additional co-pack sales.
In 1999, as a result of continuing sales growth, Skinner purchased a new building and built a state-of-the-art production facility. The new plant covered 95,000 square feet of production space including two production lines.
The new facility has consistently received AIB’s Superior rating and has been described as "a stainless steel monument," "a beautiful facility," and "the nicest bakery in the Midwest!" In 2002 Skinner Baking expanded the facility by 8,000 square feet to incorporate a new automated packaging area and shipping dock. In 2004 Skinner again expanded to incorporate new receiving docks and a new 8,000 square foot tempering room and storage area.
Realizing the need to stay competitive, Skinner Baking made the decision to add a 14,800 square foot on-site storage freezer. The freezer, completed in March 2006, services 850 pallet positions and gives Skinner Baking the ability to directly ship many customers. The freezer addition expanded the current facility to 125,800 square feet.
The goal for Skinner Baking has been and will always be to manufacture high quality/competitively priced bakery products that meet and exceed our customer’s needs. The company currently produces a large variety of Danish products in addition to various batter products. Skinner’s plans for the future are to continue to produce high quality products at competitive prices and to adapt and grow to meet the bakery industry’s changing needs.
