History
Founded in 1975, Girls Incorporated of Omaha annually serves more than 5,000 young people regardless of ability to pay and offers gender-specific, research-based education programs and services for girls in our community.
Girls Incorporated programs encourage girls to master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Many girls are enriched with unique experiences they will carry with them their entire lifetime.
Girls Incorporated serves girls ages 6 to 18 in its facilities in north and south Omaha. Additional girls and young people experience Girls Incorporated programming through outreach programs. Kid-Ability! , a nationally recognized child sexual abuse prevention program, equips young people with information they need to keep safe and gives them skills to identify people who can help them.
Girls Incorporated s programming is focused on six-core goals-
- Career & Life Planning
- Health & Sexuality
- Leadership & Community Action
- Sports & Adventure
- Self Reliance & Life Skills
- Culture & Heritage
Bill of Rights:
Girls have the right to be themselves- people first and females second- and to resist pressure to behave in sex-stereotyped ways.
Girls have the right to express themselves with originality and enthusiasm.
Girls have the right to accept and enjoy the bodies they were born with and not to feel pressured to compromise their health in order to satisfy the dictates of an ideal physical image.
Girls have the right to be free of vulnerability and self-doubt and to develop as mentally and emotionally sound individuals.
Girls have the right to prepare for interesting work and economic independence.
Girls, Inc. offers post-secondary student and teacher internship opportunities seasonally, going into the schools to talk about the Girls Inc. programs, and having school students tour the site as a career learning opportunity. Please contact Jane Allamong at (402) 457-4676 to coordinate these activities.
