POSITION TITLE: Fire Equipment Mechanic

REPORTS TO:  Fleet Maintenance Superintendent

SUPERVISES:  --------

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:            

Responsible for performing routine to complex repair, maintenance, and modification of fire trucks and equipment, heavy motorized equipment, and heavy and light trucks and automobiles, including inspections and record maintenance. This position requires on-call availability as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Services all Fire Department vehicles, fire pumps and their components, and stand-by power supplies such as auxiliary generators, AC and DC electrical systems as well as other complex fire apparatus on a regularly scheduled basis.

Performs mechanical repairs and maintenance work on fire engines, ladder trucks, support trucks, ambulances, department vehicles, and rescue equipment.

Participates in the general repair, maintenance, and overhaul of light and heavy vehicles, gasoline and diesel motors, fuel systems, transmissions, brake components, hydraulic pumps, and other automotive, mechanical, and electrical equipment; makes necessary service calls when needed.

Replaces brakes, tires, lights, batteries, filters, and performs oil changes and other preventative maintenance tasks.

Uses manual techniques or computerized systems to diagnose operational problems on all types of firefighting apparatus and heavy equipment to identify mechanical/technical problems.

Tests and inspects fire trucks, equipment, and vehicles to ensure readiness for service and compliance testing; documents and schedules needed repairs and maintenance.

Operates all fire equipment and systems to test drive before and after repairs.

Performs equipment fabrication on vehicle accessories and other pieces of equipment in need of repair.

Responsible for ensuring the proper and safe performance of repair and maintenance activities on City vehicles and equipment.

Prepares and maintains various records including, but not limited to, materials used, labor hours, shop repair orders, maintenance reports, etc.; utilizes various computer programs in the preparation and maintenance of records.

Participates in the preventative maintenance program for City fleet vehicles and equipment.

Provides emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment as needed.

Assists in the maintenance of shop supply inventory; orders miscellaneous supplies as needed in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Ensures the proper maintenance of tools and equipment by checking and cleaning tools and equipment after use.

Safely operates City vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools in the performance of duties according to established procedures.

Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; keeps work area clean and safe; follows safety rules and safe work practices; uses safety equipment as required.

Attends various professional and mechanical training opportunities to keep informed of the techniques, skills, technology, and equipment used in maintenance and repair duties; assists in training staff as needed.

Attends meetings, answers inquiries, and makes recommendations on repairs and purchases as needed.

Physical presence at the assigned job location is an essential function of this role. This position requires onsite attendance during assigned working hours, with remote work arrangements unavailable. Management may consider exceptions under specific circumstances and in accordance with City policies.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Participates in snow removal operations.

Assists in other City activities such as Clean Up Days, Papillion Days, etc.

Assists all divisions and departments as required to accomplish the goals of the Public Works Department and the City of Papillion.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of and ability to perform the construction, assembly, adjustment, maintenance, operation, and repair of diversified automotive vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, fire equipment, construction equipment, and heavy trucks.

Knowledge of and ability to maintain and to apply the techniques and skills used in routine and major repairs on diesel and gas-powered equipment/vehicles and hydraulic systems.

 Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards pertaining to fire vehicles, equipment, and apparatus.

Knowledge of and ability to apply the skills and techniques used in gas/arc welding and mechanical/technical diagnostics.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize hand and power tools necessary to perform automotive maintenance and repair tasks.

Knowledge of and ability to apply precautions necessary to work safely with and around automotive and mechanical equipment to promote a safe working environment.

Ability to learn and apply City policies, procedures, and regulations that impact repair and maintenance activities.

Ability to learn City responsibilities and ability to use independent judgment in the performance of duties.

Ability to adhere to a preventative maintenance program for City fleet vehicles, equipment, and tools. 

Ability to locate and address defects in mechanical equipment.

Ability to load and unload various equipment and machinery.

Ability to accurately read and interpret maintenance manual instructions and technical drawings.

Ability to operate vehicles, machinery, equipment, and tools pertaining to the duties performed.

Knowledge of and ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office, other specialized applications, email, timekeeping, online training, and standard office equipment.

Ability to accurately prepare and maintain various reports and other departmental documents.

Ability to perform job duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions.

Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Ability to accept positive and constructive feedback with a growth-oriented mindset.

Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English.

 Ability to address the public, other employees, and municipal officials in a courteous and tactful manner and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance on the job, including attendance and job performance for possibly prolonged periods of time when called out on short notice due to weather conditions, emergencies, and similar situations of public necessity.

 

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES: 

  1. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  2. Must possess a valid State of Nebraska Class B commercial driver’s license at the time of hire, or the ability to obtain one within a time frame established by the employer.
  3. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  4. Must have three (3) years of mechanical experience in automotive/general equipment maintenance PLUS two (2) years of experience in electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems mechanical maintenance, including work on fire equipment and/or heavy construction equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  5.  Must have or be able to obtain Fire Apparatus Technician Certification (F1 – F6) from the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission, Inc. (EVTCC) and Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification (T1 – T8) from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) within a time frame established by the employer.
  6.  Must furnish hand tools, basic power tools and equipment.
  7.  Must be bondable.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is generally performed indoors and may occasionally be required in an outdoor setting.   Work sites may be dusty and on occasion, hazardous. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Job duties require a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. This position requires the ability to transport oneself to and from various locations throughout the City and Public Works facility. 

This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with, or without, assistance and must possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment utilized in upkeep, repair, and maintenance tasks. Must also possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy equipment and tools. Duties require the use of hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The incumbent must also be able to work in small, confined spaces and have the ability to smell. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee works near moving mechanical parts, in precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.  The noise level is usually intense.

Work may be stressful when dealing with deadlines and working within specified timeframes.

 


Summary: The Fire Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing routine to complex repair, maintenance, and modification of fire trucks and equipment, heavy motorized equipment, and heavy and light trucks and automobiles. This position requires knowledge of automotive and mechanical equipment, as well as the ability to diagnose and repair various issues. The ideal candidate will have a valid driver's license, a Class B commercial driver's license, and experience in automotive and general equipment maintenance. They must also be able to obtain Fire Apparatus Technician Certification and Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification within a specified time frame. This position requires physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs., and the ability to work in small, confined spaces.
